Tourist Attractions
Shwedagon
Containing eight hairs of the Buddha, the gilded Shwedagon Pagoda is built around a shrine believed to be 2,500 years old. The pagoda was only 27 feet (8.2 m) high originally, but successive kings built it higher and higher.
In the eighteenth century, a Mon king raised the spire of the pagoda and gilded it. In 1871, King Mindon added a new tier adorned with diamonds, rubies, and other precious stones. The dome of the Shwedagon now rises to more than 300 feet (91.4 m) and is covered with 60 tons of gold leaf.
Bagan
The historic capital city of the Burmese kingdom is also known as the City of Four Millions Pagodas. It lies on the east bank of the Ayeyarwady River. Many old temples dot the surrounding countryside. The most famous is the tenth-century Shwezigon Pagoda. This temple houses several relics of the buddha, including a bone and a tooth.
Mandalay
Mandalay is the second largest city in Burma after Yangon and is widely regarded as the cultural center of the country. Founded in 1857 by King Mindon, Mandalay was the last royal capital before the British occupied all of Myanmar and moved the capital to Yangon. Mandalay is famous for the Mandalay Fort, Mandalay hill, Mahamuni image, Golden Palace Monastery, Kuthodaw Pagoda, and impressive Atumashi Kyaung (monastery).
Mrauk U
Once a powerful kingdom, Mrauk U still attracts visitors, foreign and local alike, to get a glimpse of several ancient temples and pagodas such as Shitthaung, Koethaung and Dukekanthein, and a 3-hours boat trip from Mrauk U along the Lemro River to see the unique way of life and tradition of local Chin villages and tribal women with facial tattoo.
Inlay Lake
Inlay Lake, southwest of Mandalay in the Shan Hills, is famous the world over for the way its residents row their boats. The lake is long and narrow but very shallow, with lots of weeds and other growth just beneath the surface. They stand at the stern of their small craft and push them along with both arms - and one leg - wrapped around the oar. As awkward as the method looks, it works for these people.
Ngapali Beach
Contrast to mostly crowed beaches of Southeast Asia, Ngapali beach retains the unspoilt beauty and tranquility. It is a great place to take a break from the weary road trip across Burma. A few hours flight to Ngapali beach will make your travel to Burma a perfect vacation..
